This is something Ive been trying to work on myself. I have been so busy trying to implement systems for every other part of the business that this is also becoming a problem. It was easy with one crew, just going from one job to the next, now I find myself shuffling so many jobs that scheduling alone is becoming a full time job.

To answer your question......I spend alot of time on the phone with customers and on the job sites making sure everything try's to stay on schedule. I occasionally start jobs early and occasionally have to postpone start dates. This is one issue that technically has me still in the bucket, even with the 3rd crew I started this year. I absolutely hate to have to reschedule with customers, so if I have to grab a brush to make that not happen I will.

man, the big question-when I was up and running this was probably the hardest thing to make work

Ideally leaving a week buffer is key...that way if you finish early, you can contact the next customer and usually make them happy because you are available ahead of schedule

I always gave an approximate date, never really a definite date

Also, you may need to put a clause in your contract mentioning "add-on" work. You can say something to the effect of.."any work added on to the original contract may need to be completed at a later date, due to tight time restrictions between jobs"

Don't give a date...give a number in cue. H/O has a change order, adds a day to your cue, no bubbles, no troubles, call your next house and tell them your a day behind. If you give exact dates, your gonna hear a lot of complaints that your behind. You can't see the future of rain and weather, so how do you put a date on starting? People understand. We stay in contact through e-mail and let people know our current status.
Hope that helps

Add me to the one week +/-

I tell people.. I will schedule you for the week of ______ . We will call you the night before you are on the schedule to make sure your furniture is moved and your water supply is turned on. I average 2 jobs per day per crew so it doesn't take much to get off track.

Interior work we stay close to schedule but I'll still say "the week of" and I'll call you as we get closer to firm everything up.

Of course, sometimes customers need things done at certain times and we are usually very accomadating to their schedules.

Exteriors are a little different for us. While we still give them a ballpark, basically they are on the list. When we finish one, it's on to the next and on and on. Again, we try hard to stay on schedule but I can't control the weather (yet, I'm working on it).

And I always ask if they have town or well water.
