Here's a true story that came through my phone today.
A good friend of mine owns an excavation contracting business here in town. He called me and said that the sherrif had just come to his house with papers to serve. He asked the sherrif what it was in regards to and the sherrif named one of my friend's employees. Seems the employee hadnt been paying his child support and might have cheated on his tax returns the past few years.
The papers were a subpoena to appear in court and notification that as the employer, my friend is, in the state's eyes, the trustee of the employee. In other words, if the employee doesnt come up with the back taxes and child support, the state intends to make it the employers responsibility, likely through wage attachments. My friend's next call was to his lawyer.
Now, he has to take the time to appear in court at least once, retain his attorney and require his bookkeeper to deal with another layer of payroll related paperwork to satisfy the wage attachment requirements. Pretty cool huh?
This an extreme suckbutt example, but these are the sorts of things that business owners get to deal with. Good business owners make take it all in stride and make it look easy, but it never is.
If you are thinking of starting a business, be sure to get yourself a good lawyer, a good accountant and probably a good bookkeeper as well. This is more important than a good truck, a good pair of boots and a paint brush.
