PAINTS AND COATINGS

Soybean’s greatest industrial use has been oil-based or solvent-borne paints, consuming over 16 million bushels per year. But oil-based paint use is declining in the United States, threatening soy’s share of this important market.
So current use is focusing on water-based paints for architectural uses and specialized coatings, such as metal coatings for industrial uses. A water-based soy primer paint, the first in a new line of interior paints, is expected to be launched this year.
USB says results so far have been promising. The paint industry’s major concern is reducing volatile organic compounds, and soy oil meets that challenge. However, cost competitive, top-performing products must be developed to increase soy products’ market share................there

DuraSoy experience

In early 90s I Repainted a home built in 1949. Original paints were oil based. Power washed, scraped, used Glidden products alkaloid based primer with a 15 year Latex Paint. Within 5 years it was peeling (base coats from the face of the wood). Determined that there were too many layers and that they should all be striped. Due to (kids, pets, etc.) I looked for an environmentally friendly striper. In this search I found that Soy Oil was a major player (penetrated the wood and broke the bond between the old paints and the wood) and selected Soy Gel. Then I remembered that prior to Petroleum Oil based paints, Linseed and other natural oils had been used as the base for paint. Linseed based paints were all from foreign sources, but Durasoy One was from Ecoprocote.
in 2011 Soy Gel (and other stripers) were purchased. While they worked, I determined that I would use another approach. Chemical strippers were expensive and not environmentally acceptable (but were tested). Since the acceptable strippers were Soy oil based and Durasoy was found I instead chose the following process.
No Power Wash this time (learned that mold can form in walls power washed). The home was scraped: fully removing paint on one wall caused irregularities on wood surface and so only removed what was able to be loosened on the rest of the home. Late 2011 DuraSoy One was painted on all exposed wood surfaces, some wood was extremely dry and I also learned that all caulks and silicone sealers were released from the wood too. I reviewed natural (linseed and soy oil) based window glazing procedures and learned that dry wood should be preped with linseed oil before glazing windows with the natural oil based glazes. I then purchased boiled linseed oil and added it to the paint. I have also purchased a natural oil based glaze to use in place of caulk where that had been previously used.
2012 The natural oils have penetrated the wood and loosened the surrounding old paint. Some sections where the wood was extremely dry, all the natural oils have been absorbed and the pigment has flaked off. I am re-scraping the home and painting newly exposed wood. I hope to continue this procedure until all the old paint is gone.

I should end up with a more aesthetically pleasing result when the recommended 10 year repainting happens (recommended reapplication is to protect the wood as the wood dries). :)
