Taping gadgets?

Following up on the to tape or not to tape discussion, when taping is done, is anyone using any gadgets to put the tape down, such as those that put down tape and paper at the same time?

I have a paper and a plastic masker and use only blue tape with them. I don't use them that often but they are great and fast especially for quickly covering things like toilets, tubs, sinks or whatnot. For base I just use wider tape. When I finish a wall I immediately remove the tape to avoid wall paint tearoff.

For those that are accidentally removing paint from trim with tape, you really need to try a lighter adhesion tape. Try Shurtape's yellow Razor Edge available at S-W. It's pricey but really excellent stuff. I just did a job with new stained/urethaned poplar against new drywall and old plaster, you can imagine the gaps between wall and trim. I did stain/sanding sealer/poly over the wood, then taped off with Razor Edge, caulked sparingly with White Lightening Quick Dry, first coated, pulled tape, retaped, second coated. Excellent straight lines.
dont use them...waste of time and money..in my opinoin before you paint the walls paint the baseboards...after you 2 coat the walls and they lay the floors and put the shoe molding second coat the base and cut the base to the wall gives it a straight line cleaner look...all done free hand...the only time i use tape or paper is to mask something thats gonna get sprayed on
Reading some of the posts here described the love of using tape, I thought i was on DIY forum.
The handmasker is also invaluable for new contruction spray jobs. I use it with pull-down plastic instead of paper to tape off windows. Simply run a width of tape and plastic across window, pull the plastic down to the bottem and tape the edges.

I thought this was standard procedure. If others aren't doing lt like this, how are you taping off windows before spraying primer and ceilings on new construction? Unless there's something I don't know about, I'd think this way is fastest.
That's all I do for New Construction up until the time trim is ready. I drop plastic on all my windows with a hand masker... repaints and all, how would you do it otherwise?

It seems that every time I've taped a line, it either pulls the paint off the baseboard when I peel it off or it takes some of the skin of the paint I just applied to the wall when I peel it off. .
Any ideas???:help:
The only time I have a problem with the tape pulling paint off the wall is if I let it dry to the tape. If tape is is pulling of your paint your base board you have a bonding problem. The only time I have had this type of problem is on dry wall and the paint isn't fully cured. Like masking the wall to spray metal door frames.

Funny you mention that, I had a whole paragraph in my last post that I decided not to post as I previewed it before posting.... but nuff said about that... I agree!

Mark, the tape is made by Shurtape. No association with S-W other than being sold there. S-W is the only place I've seen this particular one, but other stores also stock this brand.

Some of the comments in this thread suggest some people are relying on tape too much, and that may be true, but sometimes a job is just a wall repaint or a faux finish project and you really can't afford to get anything on the base trim.
Ohh maaaannn You said Suretape... uggh.. I don't know about any of the other stuff (colors) but their blue tape SURE does not stick... I will never use it again... 3M for the blue! I also like the 3M Orange... Great for trim and fine lines. Maybe the yellow razor is comparable to the orange 3M? Not sure.... Suretape is cheaper.. that's for SURE!.. ;)

J, if you mean the blue Shurtape I use that too, don't have any bond problems on a clean surface. I go through that stuff like water just for masker stuff and general prep. Not for making lines, as it bleeds, it's just a general medium adhesion tape. The Razor Edge is nothing like that. It's truly a low adhesion high quality tape.

I agree 3M makes good tape. The 3M delicate surface tape is like the Shurtape yellow tape I'm referring to.
