A frequently asked question is......"How do I advertise cheap."

Some of you guys have signs, so to keep from being bored, move on.

For those who don't, we have some good metal signs which don't get used often. Either HOA's don't allow it or they don't seem to get stuck in the work vehicles. (my fault) Have one on a current job and in a few days time it has got us 2 estimates.

Signs are a silent salesmen. They are re-useable and if you don't have at least one, you ought to consider the investment.

I put one together today, just a simple stenciled sign ,but will be ordering some on line, I never used a sign much but I am going in a new direction for advertising, at least for me, handing out cards ,putting out door knockers, building a web site and continuing with my add in the "free publication"

I use the coorigated plastic ones. They are one color on a white back ground. I order 500 at a time for $250. I can put them in yards or on street corners(make sure to buy your permit). the metals ones are expensive and always seem to get beat up by the neighborhod kids.

In the not-so-distant past, I wouldn't have thought of using job signs. I considered them to be for the bottom-feeders or some such thing . . . Times have changed for me. We have had these out on our jobs this summer and all I can say is that location is everything. I put two out (one for each job we're on) one week ago in prominent locations. In that one week, they generated four leads . . . No leads previously as the signs were in much more secluded spots.

I know yard signs are thought of as bottom feeder advertising, but the way I see it, if you are going to do a job that you would be proud of, why not put your signature (your yard sign) in front of it. Yard signs could help install pride of the hard work you do.

I don't know why anyone would believe that signs are for "bottom feeders". It's just perception, but I always that the bottom feeders were the unlicensed guys who hid from the authorities buy NOT advertising and instead selling on price alone. (just MHO)

Couple of questions:

  1. Do you plaster the area with them? If so, how often?
  2. Are both sides printed?
  3. Where do you apply for your permit?
  4. How long do you leave them?
  5. How is all this working for you?

1. I'll do a drop of anywhere from 25 -50 one night.(i live in a large area) up to 2x a month but mostly once a month.

2. yes

3.City hall/commisioner of revenue

4. I try to pick them up with in 10 days(so that they don't become litter)

5. Didn't work great early this year, but I changed the design and got a more memorable phone number and it has taken off. usually 8-10 leads withing the first 2 days and another 5 before I pick them up.
