Should have your family in rochester start passing the word around, maybe do some advertising for you. Take a weekend and get some fliers out in that area, the bottom line is, you gotta do what you gotta do to make it happen. You started your business in NJ, you know what you need to do............get busy brother.

My wife and I were seriously thinking last year about moving a few hours away to head to the mountains. We scouted property and business opportunities and almost made the move.

My plan was to start making trips to spend a few days every couple of weeks up there to start working on new business. I figured I would have to just schedule a week here and a week there to commute to take on some projects. The only way to get started is to pick up some local references and referalls and get your foot in the door with a contractor or two. I had hoped after about 6 months I could sustain the move.

THe cost of living is very high here in NJ. There is a reason for that. Your cost of living will be lower in NY and your income will be lower. We considered moving to NC last year. We could sell our house here for $800k and buy the same house for $300 there. I just can't justify the move due to less income. THink about it carfully. I have a friend who lives and works in the upstate area and can't afford to pay attention. Do your investigation prior to picking up all that you have.

Hi Marcus and welcome to painttalk.

These guys raise some good points about markets. Personally I would rather pay a higher cost of living to live and work in a market that has property values and more business potential.

My sister in law moved to Rochester a couple of years ago. She stayed for 3 months and then moved back here. We went over for both moves. We spent a total of two weekends there, and it didnt seem to be a particularly inspired or bustling area. I could be wrong. Maybe some of the guys here on painttalk have more firsthand knowledge of the area...

Also Marcus . . . most people believe that the most ridiculous regional accents are spoken by New Yorkers or Bostonians, both of whom have trouble pronouncing their r's, among other things. But this isn't true. The Rochester accent is a sleeper but, IMO, even tougher to tolerate than the aforementioned. The day after Friday is not called Saturday in Rochester; It's called "Seeyaterdee." Beware of Rochester.
