I have a pony wall top cap approximately 7-1/2" wide that I need to brush and I want it as smooth as possible. Wood is finger jointed pine. Two coats BIN then sand smooth with 220 grit. Brush with two coats SW ProClassic Oil in semi-gloss thinned 10% with Penetrol. Brush is Corona Bermuda or Corona Marquis.

I'm not breaking out the sprayer and spraying oils in an inhabited house for 10 lineal feet of painting.

Any other ideas on how to get this as smooth (no brush marks) as possible?

Sounds like you are doing just about everything to get a smooth finish with a brush. Make sure you use proper brushing techniques and you should get a great finish.

I actually have really good luck with Proclassic even with a brush. Paint seems to self level very nicely.

But if you are seeking perfection....lay some drops and put up plastic. Spray it with FF tip.

Yep, oil Pro- Classic is pretty forgiving. If you have access, you might consider Satin Impervo. It still gives one of the best finishes you can achieve with a brush.

I brushed my workbench with a combination of a quart of black stain,Quart of semi poly , quart of semi black oil paint an a quart of thinners.... Looks like glass still after 7 yrs of rough use.

I probably didn't even need the thinners but it ain't right until you add some thinners ... That's just how it goes with oil

If anybody here wants to copy my formula you had better add a half case corona an some limes to that ...think I also added another quart of paint as well. Hard to remember

Roll it and lay it off with a paint pad. That's how I do smooth doors if I'm not spraying.

Pads are one applicator I've never gotten into. I may need to experiment a bit.

The limes are the important part, they mask the taste of the formaldehyde. :whistling2:
