I'm a color/design consultant, working for a client on an 18,000 sf home; we have selected about ten colors for the walls, two colors for the ceilings--pretty straightforward stuff. The hang-up is this: the clients had the contractor prime the walls, stating that they wanted to live in the house before they painted. Two weeks later, they decided they wanted to paint, after all the fixtures, woodwork, mouldings, wainscot, etc. had been installed. I am getting two bids--one painter wants to spray almost the entire house; I'm familiar with his work, and his masking is impeccable. The other painters work for the contractor, and want to roll and brush, telling the client that spraying would be too costly because of all the masking. Do you have a preference for either method? I am most interested in a beautiful, well-run, professional job. I love the jobs I've seen sprayed, and it doesn't seem to be a problem to a good painter. What do you say?

Basically this is gonna have to be treated like a repaint not NC, so I would go with the painter who is experienced with repaints. You can't imagine the damage and headaches from a NC guy with no experience in a furnished home.

That being said I see no problem with spraying, but its gonna have to be back rolled anyways. Personally I would most likely roll everything but the ceilings.

I am not as experienced a these other guys by any means... but I would only spray an interior if it meant not masking 75% of the surfaces prior to spraying. The amount of time saved by spraying is negated by all the masking, the cleaning of the sprayer for each new colour, the cost in materials to mask every surface, and the fact that my sprayer could be used elsewhere, like outside, more efficiently.

New construction, or repaint where floors are being refinished and no furniture I would spray/back roll for sure.

Anything else I would brush/roll.

Sounds like some real gems to work for. I feel sorry for the painters on this one. The New build turned into a repaint which sucks from my point of view because there is a lot of work to do. Brush and roll. Bummer about it though since I prefer the look of sprayed trim. I hope they are getting paid very well for the change of the scope of work.

I agree with Workaholic, why would you move in & then decide to paint? Sounds like there will be alot of change orders. "Wadaya say honey... lets do everything backwards & make it miserable for the contractor." All they would hear from me is CHA-CHING!

Maybe i'm reading this wrong, but didn't "the clients" alreay hire a contractor for this job? Why are "you" now getting other bids?

Yea, I was tempted to use the DIY Lock.......
I mean on her website about page. She has interior design listed up to 2003. Maybe she is just getting back into it. I agree with NEPS that a 18,000 sqft house normally would get more than 10 colors. In that size of house around here you would probably see 5-10 colors just in ceilings alone.

I erased my original post that called "susan" out as a homeowner and why she is concerned with price and look and someone's ability if she has used em before or can see their work and likes it so what.. AND.. listening to the schpeels of one contractor vs. the other.. I would look at their work, and if I liked em I would pay to have it done. Too many ??'s for her being a "pro"
