i currently do sub work for a larger contractor on commercial jobs and i take small residential jobs for myself. i do alot of plaster repair and drywall installation/taping as well, and i make decent money for that as well. i have a family so i would like some benefits for them, but at the same time i dont wanna lose the extra revenue for the other stuff i do

Roamer, that has always been my issue with the union, the division of labor. i enjoy the multiple stages of my day to day grind. i like having the chance to strap my own frame together, hang my board nail it screw it tape and skim it, then paint it and get paid for all of it? that to me is better than being FORCED to only take part in one, singular aspect of the work scope. i dont have a problem with going onto a jobsite and only doing my prep and painting, but its nice to bid on jobs that require me to utilize my other skills

then on the flip i see where having some compartmentalization is good for keeping people employed, especially in a city like Philadelphia. but i think it goes to far in some cases, including your situaution
