I hope that this is the right place to start this thread. I had a really easy job that I wanted to finish in 3 days because its really busy for me right now. The client wouldn't leave me alone! He watched me the whole time talking about the most random stuff! Like do I watch certain television shows and am I married, etc. It was so hard to concentrate on my job. Then when I was done, he started picking out little things that he didn't like. Of course you expect a bit of this, but this guy was ridiculous! Does anybody else have this happen to them?

Not one like that exactly
I have had overly friendly clients that like to talk a lot, which in turn slows you down a bit, but i see it as just part of the job
I have clients that stand around the job a lot, observing how things get done.
I have certainly had some persnickity clients that want to make sure all ends are tied up before signing on completion.

lol persnickety

That's not what I call them...

I don't think there is any way you can accurately forecast that someone will be over your shoulder the whole job. Maybe if they say something like "I am taking off of work while the job is going" or things like that. Then I would add some sort of percent markup just in case.

I have never had too much of a problem with that though.

This guy was more than a good relationship! He watched me like he was watching tv - while he snacked on candy even! I have to go back again because he was so picky - I finally told him that we'd wait until his wife was there to see it too.

I work with my wife.
It frequently makes female clients more at ease.

Of course there are times when a client hates females... Ha!

If you must work alone, you must be direct, and more forceful.
Advise a client that you must do your work without distraction.
In no uncertain terms.

Do not allow a client to pick your work apart.
Faux is artistic and YOUR technique is your own.
Blems are your signature.

Any inordinate situation you allow can escalate at a pace you may find unacceptable and end up hazardous.
Alway err on the side of caution.

Hi All! Well I went back to the job yesterday and everything was fine. The Mrs. liked the things that the Mr. was picking apart. In fact, he was very meek. I was never afraid in the situation only annoyed. This couple is very old and I could surely outrun him even if I couldn't beat him up, but I think that it was more that he was retired and lonely, enjoyed the company and didn't want for me to leave! I have had other people like this too - I am going to take the advice of Tmrrptr and be more forceful. :)

Oh gosh, now I did it !

Another Charlize Theron, and it's my fault !!!
(forgot what movie she was in)

Let me try this...

End result of your workmanship is for clients entertainment & enjoyment.
If the process is also to their benefit, that's a bonus for you!

We have done many, many jobs, at the request of the homeowner, and they are nearly horrified at having people work in their home, and they are very happy with the end result...

Watcha gonna do?

Retired engineers
God bless them...but: oy!

With some retirees it seems like part of your fee was paid out of the "entertainment" budget
They just want to get their money's worth (an interactive show)
Now add an engineering degree or two into the mix....

I promise that I won't begin murdering the retired clients who drive me nuts!
Of course not...
You could, however, actually make a decent income "eliminating" the clients who drive us nuts
Why do it as a hobby for yourself when you can make so much money doing it for others?
Muhahahaha haaaaaa
