I have a cottage near the ocean and have always used an oil based bleaching stain to keep the shingles looking good and it works great. Recently I had two of the painted sides covered with shingles that were factory treated with what turns out to be a water based bleaching stain and I had thought the product was oil based. I still have a several gallons of Cabot's Oil Based which I purchased previously. I'll wait to see how the new shingles look in a year, but can you apply oil based bleaching stain over water based? If I take a few of the left over shingles and apply oil based to them and it works - will that answer my question?

Thanks,
