What so special

Ok, have you ever had a painter come to for a job or what ever and say "I'm a custom painter" What so special about a custom painter? What make one so different. Is not a true good painter a "custom painter" I get this a lot while hiring guys.

Or what about this, "I'm a hard worker" Ya! So, your suppose to be a hard worker, I only hire hard workers. Does this mean all my other guys are not?

Just thought I'd see what you guys thought.

every time you are doing a job for a customer it is custom, right? Everyone wants something a little different than the last guy.
As far as the "hard worker" thing- We all want hard working employees, but that isn't always what they turn out to be. You hope they are representing themselves honestly and if not, light a fire under their butt or let them go.

Sorry if I ruffle some feathers, but you do not need much talent to do the typical new construction "blow and go" job. Where a custom painter (if he is any good)should deliver good surface prep, brush and roll techniques. (basically a good rounded painter)

You normally find out real quick how "custom" they are.

all I know is its an overused term for many painters that I wouldn't classify "custom".

I do blow n' go tract work, well, I did! ...

We got 'em the coverage according to specs, did a couple passes on t/u according to the contract, and kissed 'em goodbye.

Whew! Bidding to get the contract was fierce, materials the least expensive we could use, and the builder wasn't a bit bashful about grinding us for even a cheaper price before the bid was finalized.

In all honesty, the builder got more than they payed for.
A great undercoat!

We also do custom color repaints using non-standard products and techniques.

If someone is discriminating, and willing to pay my labor rate, which would be pretty much the same as other trades, who's work you will never SEE, we can do the best prep work, and apply the most expensive products of your choice at a level of workmanship second to none.
Provision will be made within the initial bid for customer satisfaction.
No matter how sensitive they may be.
We'll spend a bit of time selecting specific colors, and tones.
I don't want to have to chase anyone down for money...

Get what you pay for.
Most want it done, NOW!

Why is it that lately we are getting hung up on labels and allowing them to turn into divisive issues?

Custom painters, old school painters, whatever.

Somebody can call themself whatever they want. Someone on here last week called himself a "mover and shaker in the paint industry." Maybe he is maybe he isnt.

There is "meat and potatoes" painting and there is gourmet. Sometimes a nice juicy burger off the grill is just the ticket, sometimes a filet is best. Its what you bring to each in process and finished product that defines you as a painter. Call yourself what you want. The proof is in the pudding.

Keep the grill only on the MIND and the beef off the HIND


IMO, if one uses the word "custom" he'd be able to mix CUSTOM colors and CUSTOM finishes. Not just open the can and dip and spread.

But what do I know, I'm a paperhanger. You pick 'em & I stick 'em.

I don't like the lables either. You are a good painter or you ain't. I think that some try to set themselves apart from the new construction only types with a "custom" lable. Doesn't mean either one is a better painter than the other.

Good Post VP! I agree.

In my area the GCs call multifamily, spec homes, tract (we don't really have any to speak of) that are all painted Kilim Biege with white trim production homes. Custom homes are built for specific customers who choose colors, finishes,etc.

Humh, gives me an idea. Gonna take worn out brushes, clean them up and autograph them "ACE'S Painting" and sell them on E-bay.

Never know what some fool may pay.
