My husband and I want to start a painting business but feel we need a serious education first.

WHERE can we go to learn all we need to know about painting?

We are already self employed so we don't need business how to, but we do need to know about all the paint differences, and what we need to know to even start.

Where can we start reading and learning?

Help!

If you want to learn all you need to know about painting application, your best bet is to apprentice for a quality painting company for a few years
You won't learn all you need to know, but you'll be on your way

You certainly won't learn what you need to know about application from a book
If there were one out there, a book I mean, it would only be covering a teeny part of the technical aspect....there's much to be learned about application that is by feel...by doing...preferably with a well seasoned quality oriented pro

If you've got the biz end down, I'd suggest hiring a tech person/people
Some of us have been doing this for 20 years and still don't know "all we need to know" about painting application
That's why we hang out here...to keep on learning

These guys are obviously sarcastic, so here goes mine. If you are business savy, why do you want to be a paint contractor? Seriously, if you haven't been in the painting industry for an extended amount of time, and have not been witness to all the changes, you should not start a business. "where can we go to learn all we need to know about painting"..... UMMM... you never stop learning, and you will never know it all. You have been blessed to have found this site!!! Not trying to sound harsh, but owning a painting company is not something to google, and jump into.

yah making lots of money by owning your own painting business is easy if you google it.
but yah, there have got to be way easier businesses to run. Knowing how to paint also helps. There are tons of great threads on this site. Just click general painting forum and scroll through the pages of threads, read any that look helpful. But there is no way anyone could know everything about painting. A chemist might know everything about making paint, a retailer might know everything about mixing colors, and we (for the most part) as applicators might know everything about applying paint, and the tech reps might know what products and prep combos will work best for the situation, but knowing everything about all aspects of paint and painting has got to be down right impossible.

I think one of the most valuable resources is to find a good local paint store with a tested knowledgeable staff. I don't care what they sell. If contractors go there then there has to be a knowledge base. I'll have contractors come in who have been painting for longer than I have been alive and they always have questions. One of the hardest things about the paint field is how rapidly it changes. Also, over the course of the next few years more and more states are going to be imposing more and more strict VOC laws. That is turn is going to limit and dictate what kinds of products you can use. This often means not using the best products simply because it is no longer available. Also, many tried and true products either aren't available any more or have been reformulated and don't function the same way any more. In some ways I agree with the fellow before when he says that its kind of a hard thing to just "do". my e-mail address is [email protected]. E-mail me with any questions you have. I've been selling paint and painting for about 10 years. I can tell you quite a bit about what kinds of products to use but technique and ability takes practice. Maybe its time to repaint your house. Let me know if you have any questions....

Dover area

We're in the Dover area, but will be relocating soon to Bel Air, MD....

My husband did work with a professional painter (his uncle) for a number of years, so he knows how to paint extremely professional. I think his hang up is knowing what kind of paint to use, brushes, sprayers, equipment....and when a customer wants something specialty.

I guess I can come on here and ask then can't I?

And I checked out howtostartapaintingbusiness.com - sounds like some dude trying to get rich by selling his tips. We already know how to run a successful self employed business - my husbands an owner operator truck driver.

Why going to trucking to painting? Have you seen the diesel prices lately? Exactly.

Not to discourage you at all, but the paint business isnt exactly the promised land either. All of our costs have gone up in every possible way in the past year. Jumping in at the beginning of the 3rd quarter is an uphill battle for a start up. You might seriously want to consider having him work for someone else for a year or two to learn the business and fill the gaps in his skill set before jumping into the frying pan.
