I know we have several threads going bout how to be a good employer and stuff like that, but where have you had the most success finding good employee candidates? The only resource I utilize is CL for job openings. There has got to be a better way to find good painters. Do out of work painters read the newspaper classifieds? What about the online job sites?

I get most of people from my advertising to potential customers, e.g., yellow pages, web site, etc. I have probably advertised less than 4 times in the past 12 years.

Everytime I'm out of work I look in our larger city paper. It's not cheap to list in it, so it kinda weeds out alot of the companies you wouldn't want to work for. So if you wanted to find me, that's probably where you'd get me at. Never had any luck with companies I found on craigslist so don't even bother looking there anymore.

My last job though I got from this website. Tim PMed me begging me to come teach him how to paint & all that good stuff. Who would've though he'd be working for me now?

I did two 30 day postings online and got 50 apps each time of of the 50 maybe two or three were worth calling, and I even fired a few that I hired. So I do not know what the answer is.

I usually look at the paint store and see if they have heard if anyone is looking for work.

I am sure you can goto the bar and find a few guys!

Everytime I goto Home Depot for something (not paint, my name's not Tim), I get all kinds of people begging to come work with us. Maybe try there? You can educate them on paint & they can educate you on crack.

Do you have impossibly high standards?:yes:
As you well know, I have high standards as I know you do. But they aren't impossible. :whistling2: Actually, from everything I've read, I'm doing fine. Seems most pros will tell you that you will find one good employee for every ten that apply . . . I think the thing I need to improve on is the interview process, the ability to spot trouble before it manifests itself in a Mack Painting t-shirt.

One out of 10 would be great! I took 2 out of over 50 and havent always been completely satisfied. You're right, the interview process is tough. We have to get as good at reading potential employees as we do at reading potential customers.

I fully admit that, in the past, I haven't trusted my gut as much as I should during the hiring process. In retrospect, I can say that I've hired people I "knew" weren't going to be a great fit, doing a disservice to the employee as well as the business . . . always room for improvement.
