A client of mine has two relatively new (about 1 month old) white cedar gates. These were pricey and they want to preserve the current look. I was considering using SIKKENS Clear Wood Sealer, but wanted to get some opinions or recommendations? They're not looking to significantly change the wood tone. Any suggestions? Thank you

With my experience in clear coats it'll have to be done every year because a basic clear coat doesn't have much of any UV protection. As for the best product to use sikkens is an amazing product, what about what they use for cars? If these gates are 'pricey' maybe that would be the way to go

I personaly don't like anything film forming on anything thats not going to be painted. I prefer to use a penatrating oil stain, I really like messmers products like UV Plus. They're natural stain wouldn't change the color much, I had a customer want a stain that made their deck look the color of when it was raining. I used Messmers UV plus natural and they were thrilled, gave the look they wanted. On gates I'd recommend a good cleaning and recoat every 4 years or so. JMHO..

Do they want a sheen, or just a sealer to repel moisture? Can't go wrong with Sikkens for either, or some good quality spar varnish if a sheen is desired.

What would be the Sikkens clear sealer? I didn't know they had anything like that. I know SRD "natural", but it isn't even close to clear.

My personal opinion:

If your going to be over there again and again to re-do or "freshen" up the coatings once a year or once every two years.

Why not get epifanes or a good clear sealer (non** oil based)?

I've never run into an oil base sealer than doesn't change the wood tone to either a brown / yellow tint. I know with "clear" *water* based sealers it won't change the tone and if it does it won't be several shades noticeable.

I personally would go with a good sealer, spray several coats with a scuff sand between coats for adhesion (3 coats total). Just make sure if you do, you get all the way around the gate (sides, including bottom). Plus with the summer heat, the water based sealer will dry pretty quick so you can probably get 2 coats in, in 1 day.

Just a personal opinion. Good luck and let us know what you ended up doing!

I haven't used the clear but I did use the semi-trans on some cedar siding about a year ago. I was very impressed with it's ability to penetrate, better than any water based product I've used in the past. The clear is their newest product. Might be worth getting a sample and trying it on some scrap cedar to show the client.

Appreciate all of the responses and suggestions. They simply asked for a sealer but expressed concern about drastically changing the tone of the wood. The company that installed the gates recommended using some kind of wood sealer, but stopped short of recommending any products, probably to prevent any liability if the owners didn't like it.

I might just go with the SIKKENS Clear Wood Sealer as it's a fairly safe choice. I'm not familiar with Messmers UV, but noticed they had a cedar color as well as the natural. I might try to see what I can find out about it. Thanks a lot everyone.
