Take a toilet tank for instance.. It's right up against the wall with a reveal that can be seen by aynone that is standing at the sink.. Do you just paint as far behind it as you can and hope for the best? Is there a tool for suck a thing? Take it off?

I’ve worked around it a few times before and it is a pain… I’m going to have to do it again and just wondering if there are any tips..

Matter-a-fact.. What’s the worst obstacle you’ve had to face?

If You Can Fit A Mini Roller Behind Or As Far Back As Possible You Shouldnt Be Able To See Anything... I Suggest Painting That Part 1st So That You Can Do Entire Surface Without Allowing Paint To Dry While You Roll Entire Wall...

I have always used mini-rollers behind toilet tanks and have never had any problems with being able to see anything. The worst obstacle I have encountered was a gas fireplace sitting in the corner of the living room. I was almost standing on my head to get in the corner to trim it out.

Lately...we had to change the color on a beadboard ceiling sitting on top of reaaaally old unfinished timbers every 4 feet. The color change was from bright green to, of all thing, red. Where the bead profile went up inside the timbers we got to do lots of artist brushing...

hot dog roller w/ long handle (if needed)
it's that simple

the only thing you need to take off is the toilet tank top

Try a nuclear submarine. I am a smaller guy, so they'd throw a respirator on me and point into the dark....

there is no obstacle like painting tanks in a submarine....I can't even explain how hard/uncomfortable it is

Just today I was thinking about this. Do you paint far enough down so as to be hidden by the tank lid, or run out for Chipsters sausage roller to get all painted behind the tank? My theory is that unless someone takes the lid off and looks behind, it won't matter. I don't know if it matters.:sneaky2:

Happy painting, Paul.

I hear ya Rich. I worked as an industrial painter in the early 80s at a paper company in Maine and we would paint paper machines. You get really good at using a mirror to see whats going on.

Sometimes you get an old toilet that has the tank butted against the wall and you would never dare break loose the old rusty water closet tank bolts and break the seal from the bowl. That can sometimes turn into a plumbing liability nightmare for you.

Refrigerators, ranges, washers, dryers, indoor utility rooms with water heaters & furnaces, over top of whirlpool Jacuzzis, and closets with organizers are all fun too.

My plumbing nightmare was the time we pulled the top off a tank and discovered an upper decker. Nothing worse than that.

Nice to have you back ********.

Well just this morning I invested in one of the sausage rollers, to get behind the commode and beside the vanity cabinet in rental house for one of my new customers. When he came by for the walk through he did notice that I did paint behind and beside those two items. ********'s recent post and all the stir...seems to have landed me a steady property management company...
THANKS ********

I hear ya too Rich. I ocassionally work for a friend that does industrial painting, spent many a day inside tanks, crawling around 1,000 ton presses, spraying 60 foot ceilings out of a JLG, epoxy coating pits, etc. I have a lot of respect for industrial painters, they really earn their money.
