Pull yourself together soldier! What is this defeatest attitude? So what, some college kids are out painting houses. How does that affect you? Does it diminish your countless years of service and knowledge? Isn't this a good thing? It's certainly not a new thing.

You perform a certain LEVEL of service for a certain price. A paint job is not always just a paint job. Think about doctors... You can go to your family doctor to check out your heart OR you can go to a specialist. The specialist is going to cost more. BUT, you go to the specialist because they recognize potential problems before they become major problems.

Sometimes customers need to be reminded that usually you get what you pay for!

Now, suck in your gut and hire some dudes to fill a crew!:ninja:

I understand where you are coming from. There are always going to be guys that are doing a job outside of their pay range for a low wage. And, it is usually a disaster. I'm reminded of the dude either here or on contractor talk that is painting a water tank and wanted to know if he should prime the rust. It's going to be a disaster! And, like I already mentioned, we usually get what we pay for!

BUT... again... try not to let this get you down. When you think about negative things like this is takes your focus off of the positive things! Every second you spend thinking about a negative is one less second that you are using to move yourself forward.

I learned in life that there are two ways to have the tallest building in town. We can either work really hard and build our building up... or... tear everyone elses down. We might look down from our highrise and see some little dude building a building out of sticks and we used bricks. He may even reach the height of ours, but eventually he must take time away from building up to strengthen the foundation that he never laid (if his building does not fall over). And, what does this 'competition' do for us? We might look down and be fearful that some of the people renting space in our building will move to his because it is cheaper. And, some will. However, one of two things will happen. Either the renter will come back to us because he realizes the cheaper building doesn't have any walls, OR he won't and his vacancy will make room for another renter who appreciates our work and is willing to pay for it... year after year!

I believe that this kind of competition is actually good for us. Everyday, you have to size up prospective customers to decide if they are worth your time... or not. You just can't 'win' every customer and run a successful business. If you are 'winning' every customer you are LOSING income! If you lose a sale to one of these people, just consider that they are removing one worthless prospect who you don't have to waste time on. The guys who do a bad job will actually HELP the reputation of 'real' painters. A customer who gets burnt on a cheap paint job will think twice before hiring 'some guy' again.

My advice:
First, visualize your business and problems. See them as the are, BUT... now worse than they are! One of the most common mistakes business owners make is to magnify problems in their mind. They waste mental energy thinking about solutions to problems that don't even really exist!

Next, visualize you business as you want it to be. Think of the positive possibilites. Use your mental energy to propel yourself forward.
