Black Iron?

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! Damn Green Bay..
Alright, gotta pick some brains because I am tired of picking my nose and trying to figure out what the deal is with this "Black Iron". The GC has some black iron steel poles, not primered and wants an estimate for painting them. The only steel I have painted was at the shipyards. We blasted, primed, and used fast clad. But I am unsure of exactly what black iron is and how to prep and paint it. Could somebody shed some light on this black iron mystery..thanks:bangin:

Black iron is the same material made into plumbing pipes, which are mase in a hghly oil filled enviroment. DTM will completely delaminate within weeks. U need universal alkyd metal primer THEN top coat with dtm or similar acrylic to achieve gloss retention. About $30 buck per column.
