Multiple color charge?

I tried the search but didn't really see any other threads on this specific topic.

I work for a custom home builder doing homes ranging from around 3,000 sq ft on up thru 6,000 sq ft.

When I bid the jobs I bid for 1 color ceilings and trim and 1 main wall color. Once in a while a homeowner will ask for an extra color in a bedroom or two and I do that for no extra charge. However, once in awhile I run into a house where the homeowner wants a ton of different colors. In the case of the house I'm currently doing there's 9 different wall colors in a 6000 sq ft house. Apparently my builder gave them allowance for 5.

So my question is: In custom new home construction do you add a charge for multiple colors? If so how much? If not why?

I know it's going to slightly bump my material costs and labor because I have to swap between 9 different colors throughout the job and at punch out.

I've gone around with my builder about this in the past and it never seems to get resolved. I feel like i should give them a flat cost, a per color upgrade cost, if you will. Thoughts?

We specify added charges per additional color or per additional product. That was an expensive lesson. "Hey, they're all the same color!"

You have to figure there is at LEAST an extra hour of labor for each color change in that you have to clean equipment and potentially spend time at a paint store to get paint mixed. Plus potential travel time to pick up paint and extra rollers.

I would be hesitant to give the builder a flat rate for charges related to additional colors, unless you really wanna take the time to break-down the list of variables which affect the extra time projected and give him figures for each scenario.

If not, say you give the builder a flat rate charge after seeing the job...8'walls, only trim to cut around is base, windows & doors. You do the work and the $100 covered the extra color change, no prob.

Next house you do has 10' walls, crown, chair, and picture molding. You do the work for the predetermined $100 additional color fee and you lose your shirt.

When a builder or owner insists on having some sort of figure ahead of time for potential color additions, I go by % up charges, which seem to most accurately cover my costs involved.

I agree, in my "biggest job of 2014" thread, in the photos forum, all base and casing were to match the various wall colors, there were two different door colors, four different window colors, four different casework colors, plus several different wall and ceiling colors/sheen. The amount of colors added thousands of $$ to the scope. Every custom job is different. That job went over 50% above my original one color price. There were a few other changes, but the multi-colors were the vast majority.
