My process is coverstain and complete skim coat

 

Let me clarify. When I said paste, I meant the complete backing.

2 coats of gardz, maybe a quick pole sand and skim it

 

I would pole sand so any boogers aren't coming loose and messing with a nice clean skim coat.

 

Gardz is the magic elixir in this scenario. I tip my hat to ChrisN for recommending Gardz over the years. Man, has it saved me many a headache, literally.

 

If you are talking about priming over the paper backing, keep in mind that just because it is stuck tight to the drywall paper does not guarantee that it won't come loose from the mud joints once it gets wet with the primer and paint. You may want to wet a test area to see how it reacts before using the Gardz, or whatever other primer you have in mind.

 

That's why I would either double prime with shellac, or put a really good coat of coverstain on.

 

Roman makes a similar product and if memory serves me (which is questionable these days...lol) I believe I heard that sw is coming out with their version. May have done it already? Ask a rep about it.

 

And true. It may blister a little after the 1st coat, doubt it, but I've had it happen. Just cut the blister out and hit the spot with more gardz.

 

SW has a product called drywall conditioner that is supposedly a Gardz equivalent. I was hesitant to do the Gardz because it's water based and the old school train of thought says you shouldn't put water based anything on water soluble wallpaper backing.

I ended up steaming it off any way and used SW water based pro block as the primer. But only because I had it left over from another job. 😀

 

I think any time you can get back to the original wall you get a better job.
I will also agree with the group that says the Gardz is superior to other supposedly comparable products, especially over paste residue.

If you can get Drawtite, it is actually much better than Gardz.
Gardz was copied from the original Drawtite, which I believe was formulated for concrete.

Just to update the thread, this was the most disgusting wallpaper I've ever taken down. I ended up using my trusty Wagner steamer which worked great. The problem was the nasty gobs of paste along with the release back paper. It was a mess.

 

Yes I agree with at lease doing a test to see if priming over the backing. I personally would try my best to strip the backing first,,,

 

Yes drawtite works well without the caustic smell of gardz. My sw store won't carry it so I buy online from scotch paints :+1:
